We are proud to announce that our paper “From Coders to Critics: Empowering Students through Peer Assessment in the Age of AI Copilots” received the Excellent Paper Award at the 11th International Symposium on Educational Technology (ISET 2025) in Bangkok, Thailand.
Authored by Santiago Berrezueta-Guzman, Stephan Krusche, and Stefan Wagner, the paper addresses the impact of AI-powered coding assistants like ChatGPT on programming education—specifically the challenges they pose to assessment, academic integrity, and skill development. In response, the authors conducted an empirical study of a rubric-based, anonymized peer review process in a large-scale introductory programming course. Students assessed each other’s 2D game projects, and their evaluations were benchmarked against instructor grades. The results showed that peer reviews aligned moderately well with instructor assessments and were perceived as fair by students. Moreover, the process encouraged engagement, critical reflection, and a strong sense of responsibility in giving feedback. The paper outlines design implications for building scalable and trustworthy peer assessment systems in an era of AI-assisted learning.
The award recognizes the paper’s significant contribution to the field of educational technology. Many thanks to the ISET 2025 organizers for this honor!
